As the temperature begins to fall and the color of the leaves changes, so does the Mariner student body’s music taste. Ever see students in the hallways with their headphones? Do you wonder what they are listening to? Accumulated using a voluntary student questionnaire, we found out what the Mariners are listening to this fall.
What makes a fall playlist so special? Although some students felt as if fall music wasn’t that special, as they listened to the same music year-round, the majority of students who took part in the survey had similar responses, saying music sounds more emotional and chill in the fall, or brings back nostalgic childhood memories, or that the spooky, Halloween music adds fun to the atmosphere.
“Listening to music in the fall feels different because everything feels calmer and more peaceful. The weather, colors, and mood make music sound more relaxing.” Junior Ayden Reyes
“feels like an episode of Gilmore Girls when you’re super locked in and feel like a main character.” Junior Keerthana Sabhanayakam
“ The vibes give cozy home aesthetic, imagery is strong, such as orange leaves, trick or treating, fall, walking outside, and Halloween.” Senior Alyssah Joann Tai Bianchi
“Music in the fall is my lock-in session because it helps me focus on doing my assignments,” said sophomore Dylan Pardorla
“Listening to music in the fall feels aesthetic, especially when it’s raining.. Like it makes me feel like I’m in a movie.” Sophomore Erin C. Echaluse,
“Halloween music always adds to the atmosphere of fall in a specific way. It doesn’t always make things more creepy, but it just adds to the vibes and fun.” Senior Jaliyah Fitch
“YES! It absolutely feels different… I believe the change of weather plays a huge role in the kind of music outside. If it’s cold outside and gloomy, Drake and artists such as Bryson Tiller, even Giveon, will play, but if it’s more of an autumn vibe with orange and yellow leaves everywhere, I play some Faye Webster and Clairo. The vibe is great, sometimes sad, but definitely intimate,” says senior Lexi Mejia
“It feels more comforting. like how apple cider tastes.” Junior Madeleine Carle
“Fall vibes in general are just a nostalgic kind of feeling; it feels unreal. Listening to music during fall just adds to the nostalgic aspect and makes the world around you feel comfortable,” says senior Raelyn Leary.
As spooky season nears, how does a student’s playlist change? Eighty-three students responded to share their favorite go-to songs or playlists when fall roles around. Some of the most popular answers included, We Fell in Love in October” by girl in red, “Sweater Weather” by The Neighbourhood, “I Wanna Be Yours” By Arctic Monkeys, “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star, or any song by Drake and NBA Youngboy.
Some students named some classic Halloween tracks, such as “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, “Monster Mash” by Bobby Pickett, and the Ghostbusters theme song. Some students also decide that the holiday season can’t come soon enough and decide it’s time to start listening to their Christmas playlist.
“My go-to songs for fall are usually chill or cozy ones. I like listening to calm, acoustic music or old classics that fit the cool weather vibe.” Junior Ayden Reyes
What songs specifically could you assume the Mariners are listening to as a staple in their fall playlist? Expectedly, the most popular answers were “Monster Mash” by Bobby Pickett and “Thriller” by Michael Jackson
“Thriller” is a family classic that I can’t escape, but still love regardless.” Senior Jaliyah Fitch
Another popular staple was “Spooky Scary Skeletons” by Andrew Gold and The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack, which “always slaps,” as junior Ziyon Williams says.
However, not every student listens to the same music. A few responses stood out amongst the rest. Loren C. Echaluse, 10th, shouted out “Calling All The Monsters” by China Anne McClain, and another mentioned how childhood nostalgia influenced their favorite fall playlist staples.
“I like listening to FNAF songs to revisit my favorite horror game when I was younger,” says junior Roen Curtis Mendoza
Fall gives students an opportunity to listen to their favorite artists and get excited for new albums. So lastly, we asked students which artists they are excited to listen to this fall. Most students said they are excited to listen to Drake this fall, with a close second being Laufey, and some students were a little more niche.
Reyes said, “This fall, I’m excited to listen to Ed Sheeran’s “Autumn Variations” because it feels calm and matches the cozy fall mood.”
Whether students decide to cozy up and listen to fall classics, release their spooky spirit with Halloween favorites, or vibe with a Halloween hype song, they can listen to Drake and NBA Youngboy. The Mariners are creating their own spooky soundtracks this fall season.
