Our wonderful campus is home to many talented visual artists, among them is Chidi Onwuemeka, class of 2027. Throughout their time at Moreau, Chidi has taken several different art classes, honing their craft and improving themself year by year. Nowadays, their art pieces are often displayed in the ISC for students to enjoy.
Art has always been a fundamental part of Chidi’s life. Growing up, they were inclined towards art- constantly searching for something to do with their hands. Onwuemeka recalls that their career “probably started off like that, just doodles in my 400-page math book.”
However, Onwuemeka wasn’t able to take official classes until coming to Moreau. Their grade school did not offer any art classes, so now, they try to fit as many as possible within their schedule.
“So far, I’ve taken visual arts, ceramics, and drawing, and this year, I’m taking AP Studio Art,” Chidi shared.
Art isn’t just a hobby for Chidi. For them, art is about telling stories that captivate the viewers and evoke emotions within them. The reason Chidi was, and is, compelled towards art is the belief that these emotions make a difference in someone’s life, no matter how small.
As Onwuemeka put it, “I enjoy art because it’ll outlive me, and my feelings, and capture who I was when I was making it.”
A large part of telling a compelling story is the medium in which Chidi chooses to work. Although skilled in media ranging from ceramics to painting, Onwuemeka has a clear favorite. “I’m a traditionalist at heart. My favorite medium will always be graphite. Never Charcoal,” Chidi replied without hesitation when asked about their preferred medium.
Chidi will continue to create art for years to come, perhaps impacting thousands of lives someday. For now, their art remains in the ISC, touching the lives of Mariners who pass by.
