Moreau’s Historic Flag Football Team

A new sport is making its way into Moreau, as Girls Flag Football is being added to Mariner Athletics. Student-athletes are stepping onto the field, ready to compete, learn, and build a flag football family. As the season begins, the girls are training hard and already competing in games weekly. 

Former Mariner Kaliyah Kirkwood (26) inspired the addition of the sport by founding the Flag Football club in 2024. The club hosted multiple flag football events and encouraged many people to participate and get excited about the sport. The efforts and success of the club were not ignored, but were taken into consideration and sparked change.

One of the captains of the team, senior Alexa Edwards, is particularly excited about the addition of Flag Football because she has been playing since she was 6 years old and even plans to continue playing in college. When asked how she feels about leading a new team, Alexa said that she thinks it’s fun to “be a part of a new experience.”

  One of the other players, senior Jossi Jones, says that she joined the team after Alexa encouraged her to. She explained that during practices, in order to prepare for games, the team focuses on footwork and agility drills because those are “really important for Flag Football”. 

The team recently played American High School in their second match of the season and won by 46-0, blowing away the Mariners in the stands. All tickets are available on Mariner Athletics, so make sure to check out some of their games and support our new and growing Girls Flag Football team!
