Moreau Catholic High School is entering a new era this fall as the school launches its first girls flag football program. The program began as a club in 2024, founded by Kaliya Kirkwood (26), before expanding into a competitive team this fall. After opening the season with a 26-0 loss to Castro Valley, the Mariners had an opportunity to respond when they faced American on Aug. 26 in their first home game.

The Mariners responded in a big way, defeating the Eagles 46-0 and earning the first home victory in program history.

The offense was led by senior Alexa Edwards, who had a standout performance on the ground. Edwards rushed for 131 yards and three touchdowns, including a long run of 60 yards. Her big plays helped set the tone for Moreau’s dominant offensive performance.

As a team, the Mariners finished with 214 rushing yards on 15 carries, averaging 14.3 yards per carry. Senior Camilla Walton rushed for 34 yards on three carries, sophomore Alexis Moreno ran for 24 yards on two carries, and senior Maya McComb added 10 yards on two carries.

Moreau’s defense also came up huge in the shutout, holding American scoreless throughout the game. Sophia Antioquia led the defensive effort with six flag pulls, helping the Mariners put together a complete performance on both sides of the ball.

The new program marks an expansion and history for Moreau athletics. Leading the team is Coach Shannon Bubar, who is guiding the Mariners through their first season.

Starting a new team comes with challenges including establishing team chemistry and creating a foundation that future Moreau teams can build upon. These players are not only competing but also helping establish the identity of the program.

“We just want to build a culture and a strong environment where girls can feel as if they can play,” said senior Maya McComb.

The players’ involvement is helping shape what Moreau Catholic girls flag football as the program begins its inaugural season. The program also gives students with different levels of athletic experience another opportunity to participate in school sports and represent the Mariners.

With the first two games now behind them, Moreau can use the 46-0 victory as a foundation for the rest of its inaugural season. While wins will remain an important goal, the players and coaches are also focused on building a strong team culture and creating a program that can continue to grow in the seasons ahead. The Mariners will look to build on their momentum when they return to the field against Encinal on Aug. 31 at Al Vermeil Field.

I think it’s good that Moreau Catholic is staring a flag football team. The 46-0 win show much potential the team has and the prayer are making it good for there future teams to follow.
