Academic Integrity and the use of Artificial Intelligence
Students at school are using AI to help with homework this school year. Students use it in class and at home when they get homework. Many teachers say AI is affecting the way students learn and think.
Students think that ai is helping them due to the fact that it is making homework and tests easier for them. For example, instead of cramming all night for an exam, a student can go to an AI app and ask them to make a practice test or flashcards. Even though this is a good method to use if you do it too often, it can start to make students depend on ai instead of learning the skills on their own.
Some teachers say that when students use AI too much, they stop trying to think through hard problems by themselves. Other students say AI helps them understand things faster because it explains a problem step by step.
A student from Newark Memorial Highschool named Ethan Batte thinks “ Artificial intelligence is a waste of time due to the fact that when it comes to a quiz, test, and exam artificial intelligence isn’t gonna be there to save you”.
AI can be helpful, but students still need to do work independently on their own. If kids use AI the right way, it can be beneficial, but if they use it too often, it might decrease their learning ability.
Father Bruce Cecil says, “using AI for schoolwork is just wasting your learning capability, the more you AI the more you get more dependent on it”. Father Bruce Cecil then shared that he is worried about academic honesty in school. He explained that when students let AI handle too much of their work, they don’t build the real skills they need later.
Fr. Bruce also talked about how teachers need to monitor the work that the students submit. One method he uses to prevent academic dishonesty is doing homework on paper. He suggests that doing this makes it harder for students to use ai since they are not using technology. He believes that using AI should help students learn, not replace their effort, and he hopes all students choose honesty instead of dishonesty.
As AI keeps growing, students will have to choose how to use artificial intelligence the correct way. People think AI can help kids learn faster, meanwhile others worry it might make students depend on it too much. Every teacher agrees that honesty matters most. As Fr. Bruce said, “I just wish all students were honest about their work. I don’t want my future doctor to be someone who cheated to become a doctor.”
