Making Waves at Opening Rally
Student government started the school year on Aug. 24 at the annual opening rally at Al Vermeil Field, where students participated in water games and showed strong school pride.
This year’s theme, “Baz Under the Sea,” was selected by class council rally officers who have been planning the event since last summer.
As students made their way to the bleachers under the hot sun, seniors continued past to the baseball field entrance on the far side of the field. Dressed in blue, the seniors stormed the field for the annual “senior run-out.”
After three years of watching past classes run out onto the field, it was finally the class of 2027’s turn to lead. Associated Student Body Activities Commissioner Jasper Durie led the charge in a red lobster costume.
Durie said, “It’s something we’ve been looking forward to for, like, ever since freshman year,” and “being able to do it was kind of surreal.”
The rally began with a spirit check to gauge how much energy each class had. In their first spirit check, the frosh began with the “Scuba” dance, a widely popular TikTok trend over the past year.
Sophomores swayed back and forth and clapped to “Waterfalls” by TLC for their spirit check.
Juniors parted the crowd and sang to “How Far I’ll Go” from “Moana”, while junior rally officer Yasmine Martiniz dressed as the protagonist and ran through the bleachers.
The seniors took inspiration from Erling Haaland and the Norwegian men’s national soccer team, which gained widespread popularity during the World Cup last summer. Taking the internet by storm was the “Viking Row,” in which fans moved their arms back and forth in a synchronized rowing motion. The senior class showed strong participation for its spirit check as the entire class took part in the Viking Row.
The opening rally is the only school rally held on the football field, with classes seated in the bleachers. The outdoor setting let students participate in water games, including water balloon dodgeball and spraying each other with squirt guns.
The Moreau Catholic Rally Squad delivered a high-energy performance, bringing spirit with gold pompoms and a dance routine to popular hits.
The opening rally was a last for seniors and a first for frosh, but a favorite for all.
