Six new players joined the boys’ tennis team this year, and they’re off to a great start. Even though there have been a couple of rainy days impacting the start to the season, the boys tennis team is still planning to shine.
Freshman Rishan Gurbani started training early, coming to the girls’ practices in the fall.
“I went to get an idea of how practices are and to start early and get extra practice before the spring season. I also play on the weekends with my dad to do well for upcoming matches. We had our first pre-season match on February 26, and I think it went alright, but there’s a lot to learn,” Gurbani says.
Sophomore Ethan Huang won the Mariners’ first pre-season match as singles, and he’s been preparing for the real matches to start.
“I have high hopes for this season. It was great winning the first game. I hope to continue this streak this season. Thank you to all my teammates who push me to be better. Our team has a lot of potential and with hard work we can improve and do well,” Huang says.
A look into practice involves running, stretching, and rallies. Practice lasts from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Monday through Thursday.
“At the start of practice, we start with running a little, then stretching, and then Coach Flor feeds us tennis balls to practice our groundstrokes. Afterwards, we practice our serves. Lastly, the coach would split us off to play one set matches against each other,” Gurbani says.
“I’m looking forward to the season and I hope I win,” he says.
The team is working really hard and they’re going to go into their games confident and prepared. The best thing to do is practice and practice, and you will win and have fun along the way!
