Do phones, which are an essential part of students` lives, help them in class or distract them? A few learners utilize phones for education. While some students get distracted by social media or games while they are on the phone.

Phones have had varied significant impacts on classroom settings. Some students and teachers agree that phones help learning, while others think they make it harder to focus.

Sophomore student Kai Venuto says, “Phones can be used better, but overall they are distracting. Some kids just use their phone to scroll and watch videos.”

When teachers allow students to utilize phones to conduct research during class and turn in assignments on Canvas, they can be helpful. Students can use their phones to search for information to better understand a lesson. Some students think the use of phones in class should be allowed as learning devices. Some think they belong in a backpack or phone pocket during the subject’s period. Teacher Thomas Trang uses a phone pocket to ensure students don’t get distracted mid class and are able to complete their assignments and get homework done early.

Nonetheless, phones can be quite distracting. A few students don’t listen to the teacher and text friends or watch videos. This will make studies difficult and slow down classes. Teachers may find themselves stopping the lesson just to request that students put their phones away.Teachers do have the right to take the phones and issue detentions, leading to discipline consequences.

At the end of the day, phones can help students learn but can also make it more difficult to focus. Students are advised to use them wisely. Class time should be meant for learning and studying. By using phones responsibly and focusing during lessons, students can improve their learning and do better in school.
