Get Spirited This Week!!!
Students have been getting ready for Spirit Week since August. Decorations, skits, and dances… the whole deal. Now it is time to see the fruits of their labor. We at the Mariner Explorer have worked behind the scenes to get enticing info about all the work. Representatives for all the classes volunteered to give a scoop about what they have in store this week.
Spirit Week themes need to be easily recognizable and written with scripts that don’t just copy the movie bar for bar. Rally officers for every class come up with a Spirit Check; it is important that students participate as it is worth class points. The RCO also lets students know what their class spirit check is. ASB Rally Officer Jasper Durie is excited for the rally since they are, “his whole shabang,” while also enjoying the feeling of walking down the hall and seeing everything decorated.

Freshmen class council members Angeli Ong, Haley Lavarias, and Izabella Martinez speak for the council. They wanted to pick the theme from shows and movies about coming to a new school and experiencing new beginnings. While deciding, they also thought about the upcoming school year theme of being family. For them, “Monsters Inc.” was a really fun theme with many possible ideas for decorations and skits. If not “Monsters Inc.,” the runner up was “Toy Story.”
As of Thursday, October 15, the council members are still working on the spirit check. They are putting a lot of thought into the spirit check to make sure it is enjoyable for all frosh. So far, the biggest hurdle is working around everyone’s time schedule, now having to pick up the pace.
Lastly Angeli quotes, “Students shouldn’t be embarrassed to participate during the rally. The entire point is to have spirit and energy during the rally.”

Kaylan Torres, a sophomore class council member, gave me an insight into how their sophomore spirit week preparations are coming along. The sophomore council wanted to have a theme that has a lot of colors, ultimately deciding on “Candyland” as the theme. Because it’s very colorful the council felt it was a great pick.
Their spirit check is the beginning of the song “Candy Rain,” by 90s R&B group Soul for Real. The council members will yell the first part, then the rest of the sophomores yell back more lyrics.
Kaylan is excited for the skit because this is her first year being part of the student government. She feels everyone in the council has really grown and connected well. She is also excited because of unity since everyone in the council is going to be in the skit.
The biggest hurdle for the sophs is communication on the skit and script design. Because of this, they are stressing to get stuff completed by the Friday, October 16 deadline. Sophomore students should look forward to the skit because they have many prepared students joining the skit including well trained cheerleaders and dancers.

Junior council member Yasmine Martinez, informed me that last year’s council arranged the students to pick this year’s theme, with the most popular theme being “Super Mario.” “Toy Story,” “Ghostbusters,” and “Jaws” were the three other runner up themes.
The Spirit Check will be a Brazilian dance and to hype up the crowd, while one more part of the check is still undecided. Martinez is most excited for the spirit checks since it is her main duty on the council. She is also excited for the dancing.
The biggest hurdle when planning spirit week according to Martinez is decorations and getting participation in the dances and skits. For the most part though, it is getting all the decorations and paintings ready. Students should look forward to the big surprise Junior Council has planned during Spirit Week. Students should also look forward to seeing what the council has been working on during summer. Lastly, Martinez hopes everyone has a great time.

Senior ASB council member Jasper Durie helps oversee all the classes and their preparations for spirit week while helping them when needed. The senior class theme is “Scooby Doo,” after a lot of heated discussion. He believes they made the right call on the theme. “It’s what people wanted,” he says. There were two other runner up themes, and Jasper’s favorite was “Avatar”-themed.
No time during the school year signifies Moreau more than spirit week. The senior class council haven’t faced one big hurdle, they’ve faced a long constant stream of small hurdles. Scripts, dances, decoration, spirit checks, maker lab, promos; there is a lot of stuff which needs to be done well. Even with months to prepare, everything really comes down to the wire. All students should look forward to unity and class pride. Being part of something bigger than yourself is an amazing opportunity.
