More Than Just a School Day: How Moreau Students Spend Their Free Time
The bell rings, backpacks hit the floor, and another school day at Moreau Catholic High School begins. But for many students, the most memorable moments happen when they are not sitting in a classroom.
Before the first bell, during lunch, and in the hours after school, Moreau students find countless ways to make the most of their free time. Some catch up with friends, others finish last-minute homework, and many spend their afternoons practicing a sport, attending a club, working a job, or simply relaxing. While every student has a different routine, their free time reveals another side of life at Moreau.
Before the Bell
For some students, the school day starts long before the first class.
As campus begins to fill up in the morning, students arrive early for a variety of reasons. Some grab an early breakfast, while others use the quiet time to finish an assignment, talk with friends, or mentally prepare for the long day ahead. For students who have already been up for hours, the time before school can also be a chance to slow down and relax.
“I usually spend my time before school getting ready for the day mentally and reflecting on what needs to be done,” said Markus Christy, a senior at Moreau Catholic.
Whether they are rushing to finish homework or casually talking with friends, students use those few minutes before the bell to ease into the day.
A Midday Reset
Then comes lunch, a brief break from assignments, the stress, and the constant movement of the school day.
When the bell rings, the campus transforms. Groups of friends gather in the grassy area and around the cafeteria, conversations fill the air, and students finally have a chance to put their schoolwork aside. Some spend the entire period catching up with friends and debating about sports while others walk around campus, finish homework,
For many students, lunch is more than just a chance to eat, but a reset button.
After spending hours focused in class, students get a few minutes to laugh, talk, recharge, and enjoy time with the people around them before heading back into the classroom for the home stretch.
When the Final Bell Rings
When the final bell sounds, the school day may be over — but for many Moreau students, their day is far from finished.
The afternoon brings an entirely different rhythm to campus. Athletes head to practices, clubs meet, and students involved in extracurricular activities begin preparing for games, competitions, performances, and events. For student-athletes especially, the hours after school can mean intense practices and hours of preparation.
But not every student stays on campus.
Some head home to spend time with family, while others meet up with friends, play video games, work a job, or dive into their favorite hobbies. What students do after school often depends on their responsibilities or what they like to do the most.
“I spend most of my free time hanging out with friends and grabbing some food, or preparing for football practice,” said Chris Wilson.
From organized activities to completely unstructured afternoons, there is no single way to spend time outside the classroom.
Seeing Students Beyond the Classroom
Teachers get a unique perspective on this part of student life. While they see students during class, they also notice the interests, personalities, and passions that students bring with them beyond their schoolwork.
“You really get to see students’ personalities come out when they’re outside of class. They’re not just students, they’re athletes, artists, musicians, friends, workers, and so much more,” said Colleen Kelly, a teacher at Moreau Catholic.
Those interests can look completely different from one student to another. One student may spend hours practicing on the field, another may be building friendships through a club, and another may look forward to nothing more than going home and relaxing.
And that variety is what makes Moreau’s student body unique.
