Dolly Parton was an outstanding singer, admired all over the world, and so many people were deeply saddened by her passing on August 25, following her brief battle with cancer.  Looking back on all that Dolly did in her life, including her work as a musician and as a philanthropist, it is very clear that she reflected the Mariner value of giving back to the community.

Throughout her life, Parton used her success to support causes she was passionate about, including child education, healthcare, disaster relief and more. (Rania Aniftos, 2026) Through her Dollywood Foundation, she founded the Imagination Library, inspired by her father, who could not read or write, which mailed over 3 million books each month to children all over the world. Additionally, she donated to HIV- and AIDS-related charities, the building of a hospital and cancer center, the Mountain Ways Foundation for Hurricane Helene Relief and many more charitable causes. (Give.Org, 2026)

We interviewed multiple Mariners about Dolly Parton and what they knew about her—some of whom were very fond of her and some who had never heard her music before. While the students’ answers differed, they shared one common theme: remembering Parton’s great music and kindness.

Tvisha Garodia, a senior, said that she listened to Parton’s song “9 to 5” and remembered her “openness with everything that she did and how she donated to charities,” and specifically recalled how she was “very clear about the person she was”. Garodia’s comments highlight how Parton’s authenticity and generosity left an impression beyond her music.

Senior Linette Versosa said she admired how Parton “wasn’t afraid to be herself.” Although Versosa knew very little about Parton and had barely listened to her music, she was quick to remember how Parton stood for what she believed in and continued to stay true to who she was, no matter how much fame she gained.

Both interviewees agreed that Parton was more than just a music figure; she was an inspiring, authentic and upstanding person.

Parton’s legacy reached far beyond her fun and lyrical music. Through her generosity, kindness and drive to help others, she demonstrated the importance of giving back to the community. Her faith in herself and her faith in change are things that Mariners can look up to. After the announcement of her passing, Ms. Alejo played Dolly Parton’s song “9 to 5,” giving our community a moment to remember and celebrate her music and legacy.
