Senioritis is Real?!

From the very first moment students step onto a high school campus, they may hear upperclassmen talking about something called senioritis.

Senioritis is the name for the decreased motivation seniors often experience as they near an end to their high school careers. For many seniors the thought and the excitement of graduation, as well as the thought of moving on to college, can make it difficult for them to stay focused on the current tasks at hand. After spending nearly four years completing assignments, studying for tests, and waking up early, some seniors may begin to feel like they have already crossed the finish line.

While freshmen may not fully understand what senioritis is, many seniors find themselves experiencing it firsthand as they grow closer to graduation.

Similar to how a writer may face writer’s block, seniors that face senioritis may not know what to do or how to “flip the script.”

According to ZipDo, 68% of seniors report having decreased motivation in their final semester due to senioritis.1

“I definitely feel like senioritis has started hitting me…” said Moreau senior Andrew Perry.

However, there are ways to combat this. Here at Moreau, students can utilize their Gold Day office hours by signing up for meaningful classes. Instead of signing up with your friends to play Roblox, sign up for a teacher’s office hours in a class you need help with.

Another way seniors can fight senioritis is by staying organized and keeping track of upcoming assignments. With college applications, extracurricular activities, and schoolwork piling up, it can be easy for seniors to procrastinate on assignments.

When asked what advice he would give to other seniors who are struggling with senioritis, senior Peyton Leytem said, “I would tell other seniors to just keep pushing and not give up because we’re almost done. It would suck to let all our hard work go to waste because we stopped trying in our last year.”

Creating a schedule and setting goals during the week can help seniors stay on top of their work without feeling overwhelmed.

According to the College Board, colleges still look at students’ final transcripts and expect them to maintain their academic performance throughout senior year. A significant drop in a student’s grades could cause a college to revoke a student’s admission.2

However, senior year is far from being over, as we aren’t even halfway through the school year yet, and the grades that seniors get this year still matter.

Although senioritis is something many students may experience during their last year, it doesn’t have to define their final year at Moreau.

After all, you’ve made it through three years of high school already. Why let senioritis get in the way of finishing your fourth?
