The Mariner Explorer began as an elective for Juniors and Seniors, a class called “Journalism and Modern Media.” These students had little to no experience in journalistic writing, but were tied together by a common goal: to revive the journalism program at Moreau Catholic High School and turn the school paper digital.

Our journey started with learning the core principles of ethical reporting and then unpacking the variety of ways to write different stories, from opinions/editorials to breaking down the biggest games of the season. Under the guidance of our moderator, Ms. Wainwright, these students were able to grow to their fullest potential and publish Moreau’s first official student news website in September.

As I (Maya McComb) reflect on the Mariner Explorer, I can only express an immense amount of gratitude for being part of this program, which ignited my passion for writing once again and showed me a path that I am very excited to continue. When I chose the elective, “Journalism and Modern Media,” I knew I was choosing something special–a class that would change my life. With the support and guidance of Ms. Wainwright, I was able to grow from a Sports Editor to the Editor in Chief.
