As winter approaches and students begin counting down the days until break, many love to do one thing: a Christmas movie marathon. For many, watching holiday movies is a way to relax after long school days, enjoy time with friends, or simply get into the spirit of the season. This guide brings together student suggestions and classic holiday favorites to help anyone build the perfect lineup for a cozy winter night.

To start the marathon, a strong choice is “Elf.” The film follows Buddy, a human raised by elves, as he travels to New York City to find his real father and spread Christmas cheer, starring Will Ferrell. This movie has become a modern holiday staple because of its bright colors, playful humor, and simple storyline that keeps everyone entertained. Its fast pace makes it a great opening film, especially when students want something light and cheerful.

A magical and calming movie that fits well in the middle of the lineup is “The Polar Express.” Senior Ellie Le said her Christmas marathon always includes this film. The movie tells the story of a young boy who takes a magical train ride to the North Pole on Christmas Eve, reminding viewers to believe in the spirit of Christmas. The snowy visuals, warm soundtrack, and wintery spirit make it such a cozy movie.

Another favorite that many students enjoy is the “Home Alone” series. Senior Amrit Sidhu said the “Home Alone” movies are always in her top choices. The films center on Kevin McCallister, a young boy accidentally left home for the holidays, who must protect his house from burglars.” The music, the pranks, and the family-centered story make them a classic part of any holiday watchlist.

“The Grinch” is another film Sidhu said belongs in her marathon. The story follows the Grinch, a grouchy character who plans to steal Christmas from Whoville but slowly learns the true meaning of the holiday. It holds a strong place in many holiday lineups because it is easy to follow and appeals to viewers of all ages.

Le also said she includes “The Nightmare Before Christmas” in her marathon. This film brings something unique by blending Halloween style with Christmas themes. The film follows Jack Skellington as he discovers Christmas Town and tries to get the holiday into his own spooky world. Its music and animation create a memorable finish to a long night of watching.

Besides student picks, many other classic films can help fill out a longer marathon. “A Charlie Brown Christmas” gives a gentle, quiet break with its simple story and calm piano music. It focuses on Charlie Brown as he searches for the true meaning of Christmas beyond gifts and decorations. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” adds a traditional stop-motion style that many families know well. The story follows Rudolph, a reindeer with a glowing red nose, who learns to embrace what makes him different. “Frosty the Snowman” offers a short and cheerful middle piece that gives viewers a quick burst of holiday spirit. The short film tells the story of a snowman who comes to life and spreads joy before the weather begins to change. For those who enjoy older films, “White Christmas” provides music, dancing, and a classic winter atmosphere. The movie follows two performers who team up with sisters to save a struggling inn through music and holiday spirit.

The best Christmas movie marathon has a mix of different tones. Something funny, something magical, something nostalgic, and something creative.

A holiday movie night is easy to plan and always brings comfort. With the right lineup, winter break can start most warmly.
