Mariner Reviews: Spirit Week/Hoco 2025

Over the course of Spirit Week, the four grade levels at Moreau organized skits, dances, and dress-up days for the whole school. This year’s homecoming themes were quite special, as two of them were movie-themed. Sophomores chose the theme ‘Lilo and Sophs’ as a clever play on words referencing the movie Lilo and Stitch, while the Seniors decided to go Rio carnival with their theme Senior Samba, reminiscent of the movie ‘Rio’. Juniors became the ‘Just Dance Juniors’ for the week, and Freshmen were ‘Frosh 66’ based on Route 66.
It seems that one of the most popular days was ‘Generations Day’. On this day, students dressed up as different generations of people based on their grade level. The Seniors were senior citizens, the juniors were adults, the sophomores were toddlers, and the freshmen were babies. Costumes weren’t just about a basic theme, though, senior Jaliyah Fitch commented, “I had a lot of fun dressing up as my granny,” connecting Moreau’s spirit week to her individual Family. In addition, people were bringing baby bottles as freshmen, suits as juniors, and propeller hats as sophomores, expressing creativity across the grade levels.
In addition to popular spirit days, hallways representing the spirit themes were also prevalent. Junior hallway seemed to be the favorite, as interviewees highlighted its creativity. The Just Dance theme was present in more ways than simply the disco ball, however, Ava Chavez remarked, “The panda was pretty sick.” Referencing the panda from the dance to Timber by Pitbull. Outside of Moreau’s spirit week, this dance is one of the most popular on its own, adding to its allure.
Another Important aspect of Spirit Week included the dances. Seniors put on a dazzling performance to ‘Hot Wings’, ‘Real In Rio’, and ‘On The Floor’, ultimately solidifying their place as the favorites among the people interviewed. Freshman Liliana Mansfield is among their fans, saying, “There’s just a lot more dancing, a lot of high energy.” In addition, Junior Ivanka Menezes shared similar views when asked about her favorite dances. Ivanka replied, “I’m gonna say the seniors, because they had a lot of participation… and I also like their songs.”
Paired with the dances, each grade also performed skits. The Juniors danced into the audience’s minds with their musical format performance. “I also liked how they incorporated the dances at certain intervals in the storyline,” shares sophomore Enny Wang. Students also love to watch the bond between the panda and Curtis grow throughout the skit.
Along with Spirit Week, the Homecoming Dance was a popular spectacle! There were many features, including a photobooth, music, boba, and, of course, dancing. Some students enjoyed dancing the night away, Chavez said, “[Dancing] was a lot of fun.” Other students enjoyed the fresh air. Michael Arthur and his date hung outside, “We both don’t enjoy crowded, hot, humid spaces.” Natalia Bosl tried the drinks, saying, “I got the ladybug boba, which had, like, seeds instead of boba, which was interesting.” There was plenty to enjoy, even if the photo booth line was a bit too long.
Spirit Week was a lot of fun and a much needed break for a majority of the students. In joint with the night of fun students had at Homecoming, the week will be remembered by the students for years to come.
